Tips for Traveling in Grenada.
Currency
The official currency of Grenada is the EC (Eastern Caribbean dollar). The Eastern Caribbean dollar has a fixed rate of EC$2.68 = US$1. Traveler’s checks and credit cards are accepted in many places on the island.
Immigration & Passport Regulations
When you are planning your Grenada travel make sure your passport is up to date, because you will need to show that and a return plane ticket when you arrive. Grenada also has a departure tax of USD 20, which is usually wrapped up in the cost of your plane ticket.
Banks
Just in case you need to cash some traveler’s checks or wire some cash, there are banks on Grenada that are open from 8 to 3 during the week and stay open until 4 on Fridays.
Electricity
The outlets and electrical current on Grenada are European-style, so if you are traveling from the U.S. you should pack an adapter and a converter.
Language
English is the official language of Grenada.
Taxes & Tipping
There is an 8% room tax on hotel bills, as well as an 8% tax on dining. Please do tip those in the service industry during you Grenada vacation, but check your bill before leaving a tip as some establishments will automatically include it in the total.
Health and Safety
Grenada is a pretty safe place, but do exercise caution anyway. If you don’t leave your personal things unattended, use your hotel safe, and don’t walk around alone at night, you should be just fine.
Medical Facilities
If you get sick or have an emergency while on vacation, not to worry. There are medical clinics on the island as well as three hospitals.
Real Estate
Buying real estate is done through use of a local attorney to negotiate the transaction and to arrange holding the real estate under a Grenandian approved third party. It is much easier to buy real estate somewhere like southern california but you do miss out on the palm trees. Real estate investment opportunities in many resort locales are offered through an investment vehicle known as landbanking.
Phone Calls
Phone calls between Grenada and the U.S. are placed just like state-to-state calls, but beware the simplicity – the calls are charged at international rates. Once you get here, pick up a phone card, available all over the island, for the best rates.
Dress Code
When you pack for your Grenada vacation, keep in mind that it is a comfortable and casual atmosphere but toss in a few nicer things as well, just in case you decide to go to one of the nicer restaurants or clubs that will require you to dress up a little more. Don’t forget to pack some cover-ups also as walking around town in your swimsuit is not really acceptable.
